Hey Reader! I was on a call with a client the other day, and we started talking about this idea of a "trust recession." It hit hard. We're in a Trust RecessionAs soon as I heard those words, I thought, "Wow, that's exactly what I'm feeling and what clients have been feeling." — Someone recently told me she stopped accepting LinkedIn connections because every single one led to an immediate pitch. — Another's skeptical of anyone reaching out, even for seemingly innocent reasons and doesn’t want to come off that way now also! — Every other post is a LinkedIn "influencer" who've never actually run a business It feels like we can't trust anyone's motives anymore. And that's when it clicked for me. There's already been a growing distrust of big brands and organizations — which is why personal branding has become so important. But now, with all these get-rich-quick schemes, AI-generated everything, and people pitching before they even say hello, I'm noticing an even bigger decline of trust in 1:1 interactions. People's guards are higher than ever. And honestly? I don't blame them. The LinkedIn Trust ProblemOn LinkedIn specifically, this shows up as: → People immediately pitching in connection requests No wonder everyone's skeptical. The word "networking" is starting to get that same ick factor that "sales" got after years of spray and pray tactics. The Reframe That Rebuilds TrustLinkedIn has evolved over the years. It used to be a digital copy of our resume. Then it became this "never-ending borderless digital conference." But I think it's even simpler than that now. What if LinkedIn is just... your office? Think about how relationships are built in a real workplace: → You say good morning without wanting anything There's no immediate agenda. Trust builds over time. Relationships form naturally. (check out my tangent video post about this last week). Why This Matters More Than EverIn this trust recession, superficial "networking" tactics don't just fail - they actively harm your reputation. But genuine relationship-building? That's what people are desperately craving. When someone knows you as a real person who genuinely cares, who shows up consistently without an agenda, who offers value before asking for anything... You become the exception in an inbox of pitch-slaps. The Compound Effect of TrustHere's what I've noticed: The people who treat LinkedIn like their extended workplace - who invest in genuine relationships - aren't worried about algorithm changes or reach being down. Why? Because their opportunities come from relationships, not vanity metrics. They're visible to their network through valuable content and genuine engagement, but they're not chasing likes and comments for the sake of it. Personal Branding in the Trust RecessionThis is exactly why personal branding is more important than ever. But here's the thing - it's not "if you build it, they will come" (sorry, Costner 🙊). It's not enough to just share content and hope people notice. You need both: 1:1 Relationship Building: 1-to-Many Trust Building: When you combine both approaches, magic happens. Your 1:1 conversations create deep trust with individuals. People start thinking of you not just as "someone who posts on LinkedIn" but as a trusted colleague they genuinely want to support. When someone trusts you, they: This is recession-proof marketing. The Long GameBuilding trust takes time. And when everyone's trying to shortcut relationships, taking the long road is actually the fastest path to real opportunities. While others are burning bridges with aggressive tactics, you'll be building a network that genuinely wants to support your success. Start Building Trust TodayIn this trust recession, the brands and individuals who will thrive are those who prioritize genuine relationships over quick wins. I say, good thing! Because it makes every interaction that much more rewarding when you know it's real. Toodles for now! PS. After my previous newsletter about the simplest content strategy, I decided to turn that exact strategy I give to my clients into a product you can use. Available now: The Know Like Trust Content Framework [link]. Content, simplified. Trust, built consistently.😎 |

Hey Reader, I was recently a guest on The Business Owner’s Journey podcast with Nick Berry. And I’m still pinching myself a little because this isn’t just any podcast. Nick has interviewed Jason Feifer (Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine), Dr. Benjamin Hardy (10x Is Easier Than 2x), and other heavy hitters in the business world. His show is all about shortening the learning curve for business owners - getting experienced entrepreneurs to pull back the curtain and share real lessons....
Hey Reader, Question for you: if you don't tell people how to work with you, how will they know how to work with you? Really obvious question, I know, but I find myself saying it to people all the time.I get it - we're not trying to be salesy on LinkedIn. And don’t get me wrong, it's totally okay to share promotional posts every so often. You should! The thing about LinkedIn…we don't want to FEEL like we're being sold to. But, I’m still selling in just about every post. The loophole? The P.S....
Hi Reader, A top creator asked me something interesting at the end of last year. "Are you feeling the algorithm change? I used to get 30,000 impressions. Now I'm getting a fraction of that." Honestly? I hadn't noticed. Not because my reach is magical. I've never gone viral. Never had those big numbers. But my business is better than it's ever been. But There Was a Change in the Algorithm: LinkedIn quietly rolled out something called 360Brew. It's one massive AI model that replaced thousands...
