Hi Reader, When was the last time you did an intro post? A post where you introduce yourself to your network. I tell my clients to do one every few months, because your network is always changing. Some people missed the last one. Some have been around a while and still don’t know a particular piece of you, and some are brand new to your universe. (Skip to bottom to get free intro post guide!) These posts always do well, and I end up getting the best conversations from them (and higher conversion rates!) than almost anything else I write. Most of my content shows people I’m competent. This is the kind that gets them to actually like me. Which got me thinking. I haven’t done an ‘intro’ post to my newsletter. And since this list has doubled in the last 6 months or so, I thought I’d share a version of one. Veronica McGibney, editor-in-chief of LeadHer Magazine, recently interviewed me and wrote a piece called Borrowed Belief. It goes from my entry-level SDR days to business owner and all the twists and struggles in between. The short version: → My career started with 100 cold calls/day "smile and dial" as an SDR, and I was absolutely sh!t at it. Started using LinkedIn instead because I couldn’t do it their way. → Got pulled onto a call with the CEO and two other leaders who played my own recordings back to me, one by one, listing everything wrong with how I sold. Panic attack after I hung up. Resigned the next day. → Joined a unicorn 3D printing company where they embraced my unique approach. Became known as "the face of Carbon" on LinkedIn (by the CEO). → A mentor who believed in me brought me from entry-level to VP of Sales at Forbes Books. I was nowhere near qualified. She was sure anyway, so I borrowed it. → Left a $250K job for an agency “partner” role at 80% less pay. Migraines 28 days out of the month and a gaslighting boss. → Someone asked if I could help with their LinkedIn. Built something that night and sold it. Signed 7 clients before I realized I'd started a company. → Six figures in my first year, while pregnant. → My son arrived two months early and spent a month in the NICU. → Rebuilt the business while deep in (what I now know was) postpartum depression. I’d forgotten my own system, the one I teach other people, and my husband snapped me out of it with one question while we were on a walk. → Today: my solo business crossed $1M in total revenue last month, three years in. Nowhere close to done. Borrowed belief is something I’ve leaned on heavily. I’ve struggled with confidence for most of my life, and for a long stretch the only way forward was trusting other people’s belief in me until I could find my own. Intro posts don’t have to be the traditional “hi, this is all about me.” They can be glimpses into your life, how you got where you got, a pivotal moment, likes and dislikes, a challenge you overcame. Any way for people to get to like you more. Because why are people working with you over the hundreds of others they could pick? Because of YOU. This was my last 10 years for you, in a nutshell. If you want the full story, plus 10 other incredible women, you can grab a copy of LeadHer. Digital or PRINT (!) Toodles, P.S. Stuck? I have a GUIDE with 3 structures that work, real examples, what to include, and the mistakes that make it read like a resume. Oh, and some templates to pull from if you want a starting point. Hi Reader, I was on a call recently with a client who was frustrated. Her random Low Country boil post did amazing. Way more engagement than she’s used to, a bunch of profile views, and it even got her a few calls. Meanwhile her educational content, the genuinely valuable content she works hard on, gets almost nothing. I hear this ALL the time. People are baffled that the fun personal post takes off while the thorough, useful, expertise-driven one sits there. There are two things going on. 1:...
Hi Reader, Liz shared something that gave me tapping toes (you know…of excitement??). She recently had her BIGGEST month she's ever had in her business. 🥳 When Liz joined my cohort, her LinkedIn didn't reflect her at all. She had a stock photo of a person writing, a couple of books she'd worked on 8 years ago, and a lot of outdated info. She'd connect with people she met, and that was about the extent of it. Which is wild, because Liz does really incredible work with incredible people (she's...
Hey Reader, This is late . Usually my newsletter hits your inbox first thing yesterday morning. I even have a few of these written and sitting in the bank, so it wasn't a content problem...it was a life problem. I'm flying to Toronto today for a speaking engagement and found out on Tuesday that my passport expired. So I've spent the last 48 hours frantically sorting that out instead of doing the things I normally do. I didn't post Tuesday either, haven't posted today. And YET I still signed a...
