Hi Reader, I was on a call recently with a client who was frustrated. Her random Low Country boil post did amazing. Way more engagement than she’s used to, a bunch of profile views, and it even got her a few calls. Meanwhile her educational content, the genuinely valuable content she works hard on, gets almost nothing. I hear this ALL the time. People are baffled that the fun personal post takes off while the thorough, useful, expertise-driven one sits there. There are two things going on. 1: personal content isn’t niche. More people can relate to it, so you’re talking to a much bigger audience. Many people have been to the South, or have family in the South, or at least knows what a Low Country boil is and what it means to have one. It brings back a memory. Very few people are out here thinking about their onboarding workflow. That’s just math. Personal will almost always out-reach expertise on volume. 2: (and this is the bigger one) it's missing something. We still need this type of content because it shows you’re competent at your work. You can’t drop it. But there’s a way to make it land BETTER, and you can probably guess what it is. → Story. Right now, go read your last educational post and ask yourself one question: could someone else have written this? If the answer is yes, then I could have written it. So could your competitor. So could my seven year old nephew. Which means everyone scrolls right past it thinking “yeah, sure... anyway.” Don’t get me wrong, I did this for years. All of my content came from conversations I was having. Every single post. But I only ever shared the outcome. Here’s the thing, here’s why it matters, here’s how to think about it. I never explained how it came about. The story behind it. The reason I was even inspired to say it. That’s the piece that makes someone go, oh, this happened to her yesterday. This is an inside scoop into an actual call, an actual client, an actual moment. It feels more real because it is real. And to be clear, this isn’t a dramatic retelling or something profound. I’m just adding the context. Why am I telling you this today? So the test to run after every post: could anyone else have written this? If yes, it’s missing story. Now, where do you find these stories if you’re not already doing this? Your conversations. Take your client calls and prospect calls, drop them in your AI, and ask for the themes and questions that came up. I did this every single week when I started, and now it happens automatically because I’ve been doing it so long. Because if one client asked it, other people are thinking it. One caveat: this isn’t going to make you go viral. That’s not the promise. What it does is make your expertise feel like it actually belongs to you, instead of belonging to the internet. Your calendar is your content strategy. You’re not generating content. You’re reporting on your week. Toodles, P.S. I'm a few weeks out before I start actually pushing my January cohort, BUT it is already filling up. So if you're looking to start 2027 with a serious BANG, you might want to lock in your spot. Hi Reader, Liz shared something that gave me tapping toes (you know…of excitement??). She recently had her BIGGEST month she's ever had in her business. 🥳 When Liz joined my cohort, her LinkedIn didn't reflect her at all. She had a stock photo of a person writing, a couple of books she'd worked on 8 years ago, and a lot of outdated info. She'd connect with people she met, and that was about the extent of it. Which is wild, because Liz does really incredible work with incredible people (she's...
Hey Reader, This is late . Usually my newsletter hits your inbox first thing yesterday morning. I even have a few of these written and sitting in the bank, so it wasn't a content problem...it was a life problem. I'm flying to Toronto today for a speaking engagement and found out on Tuesday that my passport expired. So I've spent the last 48 hours frantically sorting that out instead of doing the things I normally do. I didn't post Tuesday either, haven't posted today. And YET I still signed a...
Hi Reader, Today is my 3-year business anniversary*! And last week I was about to blow the whole thing up. 👀 Not entirely! But closer than I'd like to admit, and am still working through that as I type this. But let me rewind: (*technically it's 3 years since I signed my first client, launched my biz 3 months AFTER. See todays post for more info on that!) WHERE I'VE BEEN 3 years of building the plane while flying it. It started with 1:1 clients and B2B teams. Then about a year ago I launched...
